It was Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in 2006 and one of the most rowdy crowds in the history of professional wrestling when the crowd was cheering for their local hero, Rob Van Dam who is commonly known as the charismatic RVD. Nobody knew at that time that the match will change the very course of professional wrestling when the two wrestlers will collide with each other. His opponent was the reigning WWE Champion John Cena who was famous in the main stream professional wrestling but was hated by the extremist wrestling crowd of ECW; who only liked the underground and hardcore wrestlers.
Nobody had ever seen such a biased crowd who hated John Cena but loved Rob Van Dam. The history of this match was as interesting as the match itself. Rob Van Dam who is known in the wrestling world for his high risk and high flying manoeuvres won the Money in the Bank ladder match in Wrestle Mania 2006 after defeating 7 other superstars and sustaining the pain and punishment on his body. He was the only wrestler in the history of professional wrestling who did not cash his opportunity to combat a wrestling champion by attacking the champion from behind. Instead Rob Van Dam issued an open challenge to the WWE Champion John Cena for an open fight with the championship on the line.
The day came when John Cena and Rob Van Dam squared off against each other for a fight that was never seen before. The crowd was on its feet as it cheered Rob Van Dam when he entered the ring. The case was different on the entrance of John Cena as he was heavily booed by the crowd. John Cena threw his shirt to the crowd four times at different angles but the crowd threw the shirt right back at John Cena. The hatred towards John Cena was so great that the crowd threw different things such as the toilet paper in the ring to degrade the WWE Champion. Now the match was not only about the WWE championship as the egos of both the wrestlers and the crowd was also involved.
John Cena was angry as he went right on the attack by delivering some hard punches to different parts of the body of Rob Van Dam. John Cena then picked Rob Van Dam and slammed his body hard on the ring floor. Rob Van Dam was quick to retaliate as he used his athletic ability to deliver some stylish but effective kicks to the skull of John Cena. The match was fierce and no one was backing down. Then out of the blue, John Cena executed his famous trademark move called “5 knuckle shukkle” where he dropped his body to deliver a knockout punch to the head of his opponent. This move is normally followed by the wrestling finisher of John Cena called the “Attitude Adjustment”. Rob Van Dam kicked out of the Attitude Adjustment by delivering elbows to the skull of John Cena. It seemed for a moment that no one will back down and this match will drag on forever.
Suddenly something strange happened as the Rated – R wrestling superstar “Edge” appeared from nowhere and delivered a spear to John Cena. Then it was all over as Rob Van Dam executed his wrestling finisher called the “Frog Splash” on an already battered abdomen of John Cena. Rob Van Dam went for a cover and referee counted to three with John Cena pinned on the ring floor in a motionless state. The crowd blew the roof off with cheers as Rob Van Dam stood tall in the ring holding the WWE Championship. It was golden moment for ECW fans as their best wrestler had beaten the very best of RAW and Smack Down. This match is always remembered one of the most historic matches in professional wrestling and is a testament to the athletic and fighting ability of Rob Van Dam.
